ഒരു കരിങ്ങോഴക്കൽ ഗാഥ

പാലാ എന്ന രണ്ടക്ഷരം വെറുമൊരു സ്ഥലനാമമല്ല, അത് കേരള രാഷ്ട്രീയത്തിലെ ഒരു വികാരമാണ്. ആ വികാരത്തിന്റെ കേന്ദ്രബിന്ദു മാണി സാർ എന്ന കെ.എം. മാണിയായിരുന്നു. 1965-ൽ കോട്ടയം തിരുനക്കര മൈതാനത്ത് കെ.എം. ജോർജും ആർ. ബാലകൃഷ്ണപിള്ളയും ചേർന്ന്, മന്നത്ത് പത്മനാഭന്റെയും കത്തോലിക്കാ സഭയുടെയും പിന്തുണയോടെ രൂപീകരിച്ച കേരള കോൺഗ്രസ് എന്ന പ്രസ്ഥാനം പാലായുടെ മണ്ണിൽ വേരൂന്നിയത് മാണി സാറിലൂടെയാണ്. അന്ന് മുതൽ 2019 ഏപ്രിൽ 9-ന് അദ്ദേഹം ഈ ലോകത്തോട് വിടപറയുന്നത് വരെ പാലാ എന്നാൽ മാണി സാറായിരുന്നു.

മരണത്തിന് തൊട്ടുമുൻപ്, എറണാകുളത്തെ ആശുപത്രി കിടക്കയിൽ കിടക്കുമ്പോൾ മാണി സാറിന് ഒരൊറ്റ ആഗ്രഹമേ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നുള്ളൂ—താൻ ജീവശ്വാസം പോലെ സ്നേഹിച്ച പാലായെ ഒന്ന് കാണണം. തന്റെ പ്രിയപ്പെട്ട വീട്ടിൽ ഒരു രാത്രി കൂടി ഉറങ്ങണം. ആരോഗ്യസ്ഥിതി മോശമായിരുന്നിട്ടും മകൻ ജോസ് കെ. മാണി അദ്ദേഹത്തെ പാലായിലെത്തിച്ചു.

Seeing those who once mentally tortured him now using his photograph to beg for votes can only be described as a twist of poetic justice.

The Final Journey of That Night

Just before his end, while lying in a hospital bed in Ernakulam, Mani Sir had only one wish: to see his beloved Pala one last time. He wanted to sleep in his own home for one more night. Despite his critical health, his son, Jose K. Mani, was forced to bring him back to Pala.

That night, without informing anyone, Jose K. Mani drove the car himself, taking his father through Pala town. As they passed Kottaramattom, the Pala Aramana, and the Kurishu Palli, Mani Sir’s eyes overflowed with tears. He knew this journey was a final goodbye to his cherished land. As the car passed the Municipality office, the "Emperor of Development" was bidding a final farewell to his empire.

There is no doubt that the major projects seen in Pala today—the IIIT, Science City, the Institute of Mass Communication, Kendriya Vidyalayas—are the results of the efforts of Mani Sir and later Jose K. Mani. However, politics is not just about development; it is about stances.
