മാധ്യമ സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യം 'റീസൈക്കിൾ ബിന്നിൽ' ഒളിക്കുമ്പോൾ:

ഗുരുവായൂരിലെ അതിക്രമവും മൗനത്തിന്റെ രാഷ്ട്രീയവും

മാധ്യമസ്വാതന്ത്ര്യം എന്നത് ഭരണകൂടത്തെ സ്തുതിക്കാനുള്ള ലൈസൻസ് മാത്രമല്ല, അധികാരത്തിന്റെ ഇടനാഴികളിലെ കാഴ്ചകൾ ജനങ്ങളിലേക്ക് എത്തിക്കാനുള്ള അവകാശം കൂടിയാണ്. എന്നാൽ കഴിഞ്ഞ ദിവസം ഗുരുവായൂർ ക്ഷേത്ര പരിസരത്ത് ജനം ടിവി റിപ്പോർട്ടർക്ക് നേരെയുണ്ടായ അതിക്രമവും, തുടർന്ന് ദൃശ്യങ്ങൾ ബലമായി മായ്പ്പിച്ചു കളഞ്ഞതും കേരളത്തിലെ മാധ്യമ പരിസരം എത്രത്തോളം ഭയപ്പെട്ടും പക്ഷപാതപരമായും ആണ് നീങ്ങുന്നത് എന്നതിന്റെ തെളിവാണ്.

അധികാരത്തിന്റെ 'പിൻകഴുത്ത്' പ്രയോഗം

മുഖ്യമന്ത്രിയുടെ മകൻ വിവേക് കിരണും കുടുംബവും ക്ഷേത്രദർശനം നടത്തിയ ദൃശ്യങ്ങൾ പകർത്തി എന്നതിനാണ് ഒരു മാധ്യമപ്രവർത്തകൻ തെരുവിൽ അപമാനിക്കപ്പെട്ടത്. തടഞ്ഞുനിർത്തുക, ഷർട്ടിന് കുത്തിപ്പിടിക്കുക, പൊതുമധ്യത്തിലൂടെ വലിച്ചിഴയ്ക്കുക—ഇതൊന്നും ഒരു പരിഷ്കൃത സമൂഹത്തിന് ചേർന്നതല്ല. ദേവസ്വം ജീവനക്കാരും കൂടെയുണ്ടായിരുന്നവരും ചേർന്ന് നടത്തിയ ഈ കൃത്യം കേവലം ഒരു പ്രാദേശിക തർക്കമല്ല, മറിച്ച് മാധ്യമപ്രവർത്തനത്തിന് നേരെ ഉയരുന്ന കടുത്ത വെല്ലുവിളിയാണ്.

ഒരു പൊതുസ്ഥലത്ത് വെച്ച് വിഐപി സന്ദർശനം റിപ്പോർട്ട് ചെയ്യുക എന്നത് ഒരു പത്രപ്രവർത്തകന്റെ തൊഴിൽപരമായ കടമയാണ്. അത് തടയാൻ ആർക്കും അവകാശമില്ല എന്നിരിക്കെ, ദേവസ്വം അഡ്മിനിസ്ട്രേറ്ററുടെ സാന്നിധ്യത്തിൽ ഫോണിലെ ദൃശ്യങ്ങൾ പരിശോധിക്കുകയും അവ ഡിലീറ്റ് ചെയ്യിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്ത നടപടി നിയമവിരുദ്ധമാണ്. ഗൂഗിൾ ഫോട്ടോസിലെ 'ട്രാഷ്' (Trash) ഫോൾഡർ വരെ പരിശോധിച്ച് ദൃശ്യങ്ങൾ ഇല്ലെന്ന് ഉറപ്പുവരുത്തിയ ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥരുടെ നടപടി ഭീകരാന്തരീക്ഷം സൃഷ്ടിക്കുന്നതാണ്.

മാധ്യമങ്ങളുടെ ഇരട്ടത്താപ്പ്

ഈ സംഭവത്തിൽ ഏറ്റവും ഭയാനകമായ വസ്തുത മുഖ്യധാരാ മാധ്യമങ്ങളുടെ നിശബ്ദതയാണ്. മറ്റ് രാഷ്ട്രീയ പാർട്ടിയിലെ നേതാക്കളോ അവരുടെ കുടുംബാംഗങ്ങളോ ആണ് ഇത്തരമൊരു പ്രവർത്തിയിൽ ഏർപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നതെങ്കിൽ കേരളത്തിലെ പ്രമുഖ ചാനലുകളെല്ലാം 'ബ്രേക്കിംഗ് ന്യൂസുകളു'മായി മത്സരത്തിനിറങ്ങുമായിരുന്നു. 'മാധ്യമവേട്ട' എന്ന പേരിൽ മണിക്കൂറുകൾ നീളുന്ന ചർച്ചകൾ അരങ്ങേറുമായിരുന്നു.

എന്നാൽ ഇവിടെ വിഷയം മുഖ്യമന്ത്രിയുടെ കുടുംബവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടതാകുമ്പോൾ പല പ്രമുഖ മാധ്യമങ്ങളും വാർത്ത നൽകാൻ പോലും തയ്യാറായില്ല. മാധ്യമപ്രവർത്തകർക്ക് നേരെ എവിടെ അതിക്രമം നടന്നാലും ഒരേ സ്വരത്തിൽ പ്രതികരിക്കേണ്ട മാധ്യമ സംഘടനകൾ പോലും ഇവിടെ പുലർത്തുന്ന നിശബ്ദത അപകടകരമാണ്.

ചോദിക്കപ്പെടേണ്ട ചോദ്യങ്ങൾ

• പ്രോട്ടോക്കോൾ ലംഘനം എവിടെ? സുരക്ഷാ കാരണങ്ങൾ പറഞ്ഞാണ് ജീവനക്കാർ അതിക്രമത്തെ ന്യായീകരിക്കുന്നത്. എന്നാൽ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന് പുറത്തുള്ള പൊതുസ്ഥലത്ത് ദൃശ്യങ്ങൾ പകർത്തുന്നതിന് എന്ത് സുരക്ഷാ തടസ്സമാണുള്ളത്?
• ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥരുടെ ഗുണ്ടായിസം: ദേവസ്വം വാച്ച്മാന് ഒരു മാധ്യമപ്രവർത്തകനെ കൈയേറ്റം ചെയ്യാൻ അധികാരം നൽകിയത് ആരാണ്? അഡ്മിനിസ്ട്രേറ്റർ ഇടപെട്ട് ദൃശ്യങ്ങൾ മായ്പ്പിച്ചത് ഏത് നിയമത്തിന്റെ അടിസ്ഥാനത്തിലാണ്?
• മാധ്യമ പക്ഷപാതം: വാർത്തകൾ റിപ്പോർട്ട് ചെയ്യുമ്പോൾ രാഷ്ട്രീയ നിറം നോക്കി മൗനം പാലിക്കുന്നത് മാധ്യമധർമ്മത്തിന് നിരക്കുന്നതാണോ?

അധികാരത്തിന്റെ തണലിൽ മാധ്യമപ്രവർത്തകന്റെ തൊഴിൽ ഉപകരണങ്ങൾ പിടിച്ചുവാങ്ങുന്നതും അവരെ കായികമായി നേരിടുന്നതും ജനാധിപത്യത്തിന് ഭൂഷണമല്ല. ഇന്ന് ഒരു റിപ്പോർട്ടർക്ക് നേരെ നടന്ന അതിക്രമം നാളെ മറ്റൊരാൾക്ക് നേരെയും ആവർത്തിക്കാം. അന്ന് പ്രതികരിക്കാൻ ആരും ബാക്കിയുണ്ടാകില്ല എന്ന തിരിച്ചറിവ് മാധ്യമസമൂഹം പുലർത്തേണ്ടതുണ്ട്.

പാർട്ടിയിലെ അണികൾ ദൈവത്തിൽ വിശ്വസിക്കാൻ പാടില്ല എങ്കിലും സ്വന്തം മക്കൾക്ക് ഏത് ദൈവത്തിന്റെയും കാണാം : അതാണ് ജനാധിപത്യം

Press freedom is not merely a license to praise the government; it is the fundamental right to bring the realities of power to the public eye. However, the recent assault on a reporter at the Guruvayur Temple premises, followed by the forced deletion of news footage, serves as a chilling testament to how intimidated and biased the media landscape in Kerala has become.

The 'Collar-Hold' of Authority

A journalist was publicly humiliated and physically assaulted simply for capturing visuals of the Chief Minister’s son, Vivek Kiran, and his family during their temple visit. Being intercepted, grabbed by the shirt collar, and dragged through a crowd like a common criminal is an affront to any civilized society. This act, perpetrated by a group including Devaswom staff, is not a mere local scuffle—it is a direct strike against the heart of journalism.

Reporting on a VIP visit in a public space is a professional duty. While the family may claim it was a "private visit," they have no legal authority to forcefully delete footage. The involvement of the Devaswom Administrator, who supervised the scanning of the reporter’s phone and ensured files were purged even from the 'Trash' folder, creates an atmosphere of digital fascism.

The Hypocrisy of the Fourth Estate

The most alarming aspect of this incident is the deafening silence from mainstream media houses. Had such an incident involved a leader or family member from any other political party, Kerala’s prominent channels would have competed for 'Breaking News' glory. We would have seen hours of televised debates on "Media Hunting" and the "Death of Democracy."

Yet, because the subject involves the Chief Minister’s immediate family, major outlets have chosen to look the other way. Even media organizations that usually champion journalist rights have remained tactically silent, proving that their "solidarity" often depends on the political color of the aggressor.

Questions That Demand Answers

• Where was the Protocol Breach? Staff justify the assault citing security. However, what security risk does filming in a public area outside the temple pose to a private citizen?
• Bureaucratic Hooliganism: Who authorized a Devaswom watchman to physically assault a journalist? Under what law did the Administrator compel the deletion of private professional data?
• Selective Journalism: Is it ethical for the media to remain silent on an assault just because of the political identity of the person involved?

Throttling a journalist’s throat and erasing their data under the shade of power is a sign of a decaying democracy. Today, a local reporter was silenced; tomorrow, it could be anyone. If the media community fails to speak up now, there may soon be no one left to speak for them.
