മാധ്യമങ്ങളുടെ ആഭ്യന്തര തകർച്ചയും 'പ്രശ്നാധിഷ്ഠിത' കേരളവും

കേരളത്തിലെ ഒന്ന് രണ്ട് മുഖ്യധാരാ മാധ്യമങ്ങളും, അഞ്ചോ ആറോ പ്രമുഖ അവതാരകരും ഒഴികെ ബാക്കിയെല്ലാ മാധ്യമസ്ഥാപനങ്ങളും ഇന്ന് കടുത്ത സാമ്പത്തിക ക്ലേശങ്ങളിലൂടെയും, കേസുകെട്ടുകളിലൂടെയും, ഗുരുതരമായ ആഭ്യന്തര പ്രശ്നങ്ങളിലൂടെയുമാണ് കടന്നുപോകുന്നത്. ഈയൊരു നിലനിൽപ്പ് ഭീഷണി കാരണം അവർക്ക് കേരളത്തിന്റെ വികസനമോ, നന്മയോ, ജനങ്ങളുടെ യഥാർത്ഥ പ്രശ്നങ്ങളോ ഒരു വിഷയമേ അല്ല. തങ്ങൾ എങ്ങനെ വിപണിയിൽ നിലനിൽക്കും എന്നതുമാത്രമാണ് അവരുടെ ചിന്ത.

മാധ്യമങ്ങളുടെ യഥാർത്ഥ പ്രശ്നം: വാർത്തകൾ വസ്തുതാപരമായി നൽകുന്നതിനേക്കാൾ, എന്ത് കള്ളമായാലും "ഞങ്ങൾ ആദ്യം പറഞ്ഞു" എന്ന് സ്ഥാപിക്കാനുള്ള മത്സരമാണ് അവർക്കിടയിൽ നടക്കുന്നത്. കൂടാതെ മാധ്യമങ്ങളുടെ ഉന്നത സ്ഥാനങ്ങളിൽ ഇരിക്കുന്നവർ തമ്മിൽ കടുത്ത വ്യക്തിവൈരാഗ്യങ്ങളും പാരവെയ്പുകളുമാണ് നിലനിൽക്കുന്നത്. സുതാര്യവും സമാധാനപരവുമായ ഒരു ഭരണം ഒരിയ്ക്കലും ഇക്കൂട്ടർക്ക് ഇഷ്ടമല്ല. അവർക്ക് വേണ്ടത് എപ്പോഴും വിവാദങ്ങളും തർക്കങ്ങളും നിറഞ്ഞ ഒരു 'പ്രശ്നാധിഷ്ഠിത' കേരളമാണ്. എങ്കിൽ മാത്രമേ അവരുടെ ചാനലുകൾക്ക് റേറ്റിംഗും വ്യൂവർഷിപ്പും ലഭിക്കൂ. അതുകൊണ്ടുതന്നെ ഭരിക്കുന്നവർക്ക് ഒരു തരത്തിലും മനസ്സമാധാനം കൊടുക്കില്ല എന്നത് ഇവരുടെ നിർബന്ധമാണ്.

എ.കെ.ജി സെന്റർ തിരക്കഥകളും പഴയ എസ്.എഫ്.ഐ കേഡർമാരും

പ്രതിപക്ഷ നേതാവിനേക്കാൾ ഉത്തരവാദിത്വവും തിരക്കുകളുമുള്ള പദവിയാണ് മുഖ്യമന്ത്രിയുടേത്. എല്ലാ സമയത്തും മൈക്കിന് മുന്നിൽ നിൽക്കാൻ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് സാധിക്കില്ല. എന്നാൽ, മാധ്യമങ്ങളും ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥരും ബോധപൂർവ്വം പ്രകോപിപ്പിക്കാൻ ശ്രമിക്കുമ്പോഴും തന്റെ വാക്കുകളിലും ശരീരഭാഷയിലും മുഖ്യമന്ത്രി അതീവ ജാഗ്രത പുലർത്തേണ്ടതുണ്ട്. മുൻ മുഖ്യമന്ത്രിയുടെ 'കടക്കൂ പുറത്ത്' ശൈലിയുമായി ഇതിനെ താരതമ്യം ചെയ്യാൻ സൈബർ വിംഗുകൾ കാത്തിരിക്കുകയാണ്.

മാധ്യമങ്ങൾക്കുള്ള നിയന്ത്രണവും പാർട്ടിയിലെ ശത്രുക്കളും

എല്ലാ സമയത്തും, എവിടെ വെച്ചും മുഖ്യമന്ത്രിയുടെ പ്രതികരണം തേടി മാധ്യമങ്ങൾ തിണ്ണനിരങ്ങുന്ന ശൈലി മാറേണ്ടതുണ്ട്. മരണവീട്ടിലോ കല്യാണവീട്ടിലോ പോകുമ്പോൾ പോലും ക്യാമറയും മൈക്കുമായി വളയുന്നത് അവസാനിപ്പിക്കാൻ മുഖ്യമന്ത്രിക്ക് മാധ്യമങ്ങളെ കാണാൻ ഒരു നിശ്ചിത സമയം നിശ്ചയിക്കുകയാണ് വേണ്ടത്.

The political landscape of Kerala is perpetually dynamic and complex. Naturally, a change in government brings noticeable shifts in both the governance style of leaders and the approach of the media. It is a pertinent question whether those who viewed the media as the watchdogs of democracy while in the Opposition now see them as a nuisance upon entering power. However, to understand the ground reality, one must recognize the actual media agendas, political strategies, and bureaucratic collusion at play behind the scenes.

The Media's Business Model and Their Shifted Strategy

The Malayalam visual media landscape has undergone massive transformations over the years. From an era where government failures were objectively pointed out through monologues in programs like Kannadi, the media transitioned into the culture of prime-time debates popularized by Indiavision. Today, discussions are no longer just news analysis; instead, they have become a strategy driven by ratings and viewership. "Neutrality" has largely become a mere ornament, and news anchors themselves have morphed into spokespersons for specific political parties.

Internal Crisis of the Media and a 'Problem-Centric' Kerala

Except for one or two mainstream media houses and about five or six prominent anchors, almost all other media organizations in Kerala are currently going through severe financial distress, legal entanglements, and intense internal friction. Due to this threat to their very survival, Kerala’s development, welfare, or the genuine problems of the public are not their priorities at all. Their sole focus is how to survive in the market.

The Media's Real Issue: Rather than reporting news factually, a cutthroat competition exists among them to establish that "We reported it first," regardless of the falsehoods involved. Furthermore, those occupying top positions in these media houses are driven by deep personal animosities and mutual sabotage. They detest transparent and peaceful governance. What they need is a perpetually volatile, "problem-centric" Kerala filled with controversies and clashes. Only then can their channels secure ratings and viewership. Therefore, ensuring that those in power do not get any peace of mind has become their definitive agenda.

AKG Centre Scripts and Former SFI Cadres

It is an open secret that a vast majority of mainstream journalists in Kerala entered the field through leftist student movements, particularly the SFI. Naturally, their inherent political leanings heavily influence news creation and the framing of questions. Many questions raised in press meets are based on "scripts" prepared at the AKG Centre to put the new Congress government on the defensive.

Deliberate efforts are being made by the media to exaggerate minor lapses or issues in the current administration—drawing false equivalences to the previous government's failures—just to establish that "everyone is the same." Repeating the exact same question multiple times to make the leader lose their composure is an extension of this very strategy.

The Unholy Alliance Between Legacy Bureaucrats and the Media

Those providing the media with the necessary "flesh" to put the government on the defensive are often high-ranking officials who thrived during the previous administration. A section of the bureaucracy, ranging from the Chief Secretary to top police officials, maintains close ties with the media. Along with leaking confidential government decisions and files, they deliberately orchestrate artificial issues to throw to the media.

A prime example of this is the frequent power outages disrupting life in Kochi city, despite the intense heat and lack of heavy rainfall. By intentionally creating lapses, these bureaucrats attempt to project it as a failure of the new government and the department minister. The Chief Minister must urgently rein in this bureaucratic lobby.

Character Assassination: Lessons From Political History

Utilizing bureaucrats and the media to systematically destroy the reputation of political leaders is nothing new in Kerala politics.

• In the past, within the Left, the Pinarayi faction masterfully deployed these identical tactics against V.S. Achuthanandan to erode his immense public popularity by fabricating news.
• The forces at play also ran an incredibly vicious smear campaign against former Chief Minister Oommen Chandyby weaponizing the media. With this history of political persecution right before him, V.D. Satheesan must remain exceptionally vigilant against these bureaucratic-media traps.

The Chief Minister’s Style and Body Language

The public is no longer seeing the same V.D. Satheesan who, as the Leader of the Opposition, was always accessible to the media and answered every query with a smile. His sharp retort, "Were you sleeping?" to a journalist who repeated a question after he had spent twenty minutes clarifying it, alongside his declaration, "I will answer when I have the time and convenience," has triggered intense political debate.

The position of Chief Minister demands far more responsibility and time management than that of the Opposition Leader. It is practically impossible for him to stand before microphones at all hours. However, even when the media and bureaucrats deliberately try to provoke him, the Chief Minister must exercise utmost caution regarding his words and body language. Cyber wings are eagerly waiting to draw parallels between his reactions and the former Chief Minister's infamous "Kadakku Purathu" (Get out) style.

Regulating the Media and Facing Internal Party Rivals

The practice of media persons loitering around and cornering the Chief Minister for bytes wherever he goes must change. Shoving cameras and microphones into the faces of public representatives at weddings or funerals is not journalism; it is harassment. To stop this, a fixed media slot must be designated for the Chief Minister to interact with the press.

Simultaneously, V.D. Satheesan has to contend not just with the media and bureaucrats, but also with internal rivals within his own party. There are factional enemies hiding within the Congress ranks waiting to weaponize even the slightest misstep by the Chief Minister. Any reaction from his side that carries even a faint hint of arrogance will be seized upon by these internal adversaries as a golden opportunity to pull him down.

While the argument that the media asks questions on behalf of the public holds true in a democracy, the people of Kerala clearly see the financial desperation, rating wars, and unholy bureaucratic alliances operating behind it. If V.D. Satheesan wants to move forward with sustained public support, he must strategically counter the mischief of the media and the sabotage attempts of the bureaucracy. Along with maintaining moderation in his words and a dignified, authoritative body language befitting a statesman, he must simultaneously shield his government from enemies both within and outside.
