അഹമ്മദ് പട്ടേലിന്റെ രാജ്യസഭാ തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പും റിസോർട്ട് തന്ത്രവും

2017 ഓഗസ്റ്റിൽ ഗുജറാത്തിൽ നടന്ന രാജ്യസഭാ തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പിൽ സോണിയ ഗാന്ധിയുടെ വിശ്വസ്തനും രാഷ്ട്രീയ ഉപദേശകനുമായിരുന്ന അഹമ്മദ് പട്ടേലിനെ പരാജയപ്പെടുത്താൻ ബി.ജെ.പി. സർവ്വ സന്നാഹങ്ങളുമായി ഇറങ്ങി. കോൺഗ്രസ് എം.എൽ.എമാർ കൂട്ടത്തോടെ കൂറുമാറാൻ തുടങ്ങിയതോടെ പാർട്ടി കടുത്ത പ്രതിസന്ധിയിലായി. ഈ ഘട്ടത്തിലാണ് ഹൈക്കമാൻഡ് ദൗത്യം ഡി.കെ. ശിവകുമാറിനെ ഏൽപ്പിക്കുന്നത്. ഗുജറാത്തിൽ നിന്നുള്ള 44 കോൺഗ്രസ് എം.എൽ.എമാരെ ഡി.കെ. നേരിട്ടിറങ്ങി സുരക്ഷിതമായി ബംഗളൂരുവിലെ ഈഗിൾട്ടൺ റിസോർട്ടിൽ എത്തിച്ചു.

ബി.ജെ.പി.യുടെ കുതിരക്കച്ചവടത്തിൽ നിന്നും കേന്ദ്ര ഏജൻസികളുടെ ഭീഷണിയിൽ നിന്നും ആ എം.എൽ.എമാരെ ഒരു കോട്ടപോലെ ഡി.കെ. കാത്തുസൂക്ഷിച്ചു. എം.എൽ.എമാരെ പാർപ്പിച്ചിരുന്ന റിസോർട്ടിൽ വെച്ച് ഡി.കെ.യുടെ മേൽ ആദായനികുതി വകുപ്പ് കടുത്ത റെയ്ഡുകൾ നടത്തിയെങ്കിലും അദ്ദേഹം ഒരിഞ്ചുപോലും പിന്നോട്ട് പോയില്ല. ഒടുവിൽ വോട്ടെടുപ്പിന്റെ കൃത്യസമയത്ത് ഈ 44 എം.എൽ.എമാരെയും അതീവ സുരക്ഷിതമായി ഡി.കെ. നേരിട്ട് ഗുജറാത്തിലെ ഗാന്ധിനഗറിലുള്ള വോട്ടിംഗ് കേന്ദ്രത്തിൽ എത്തിച്ചു. അമിത് ഷായുടെ തന്ത്രങ്ങളെ അപ്പാടെ തകിടം മറിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് ഒരു വോട്ടിന്റെ ഭൂരിപക്ഷത്തിൽ അഹമ്മദ് പട്ടേൽ അന്ന് വിജയം ചൂടി. ഈ ഒറ്റ സംഭവത്തോടെയാണ് ഡി.കെ. ദേശീയതലത്തിൽ കോൺഗ്രസിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും വിശ്വസ്തനായ തന്ത്രജ്ഞനായി മാറിയത്.

തിഹാർ ജയിൽവാസവും രാഷ്ട്രീയ വേട്ടയാടലുകളും

അഹമ്മദ് പട്ടേലിനെ വിജയിപ്പിച്ചതിന് പ്രതികാരമായി കേന്ദ്ര ഏജൻസികൾ ഡി.കെ.യെ കൂടുതൽ വേട്ടയാടാൻ തുടങ്ങി. കള്ളപ്പണം വെളുപ്പിക്കൽ കേസ് ചുമത്തി 2019 സെപ്റ്റംബർ 3-ന് എൻഫോഴ്‌സ്‌മെന്റ് ഡയറക്ടറേറ്റ് അദ്ദേഹത്തെ അറസ്റ്റ് ചെയ്യുകയും ഡൽഹിയിലെ തിഹാർ ജയിൽ അടയ്ക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. 50 ദിവസത്തോളം അദ്ദേഹം കഠിനമായ ജയിൽവാസം അനുഭവിച്ചു. പിതാവിന്റെ അന്ത്യകർമങ്ങളിൽ പങ്കെടുക്കാൻ പോലും അനുവാദം നൽകാതെ മാനസികമായി തളർത്താൻ ശ്രമിച്ചിട്ടും, ബി.ജെ.പി. മുന്നോട്ടുവെച്ച ആനുകൂല്യങ്ങളും ഓഫറുകളും പുച്ഛിച്ചുതള്ളി അദ്ദേഹം പാർട്ടിയോട് കൂറുപുലർത്തി. ജയിൽ വെച്ച് സോണിയ ഗാന്ധി അദ്ദേഹത്തെ സന്ദർശിച്ചത് പിൽക്കാലത്ത് കോൺഗ്രസ് രാഷ്ട്രീയത്തിൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പദവി ഉയർത്തുന്നതിൽ നിർണായകമായി.

മുഖ്യമന്ത്രി പദവിയും ദേശീയ നേതൃത്വത്തിന്റെ സങ്കീർണ്ണമായ തീരുമാനവും

2023-ലെ കർണാടക നിയമസഭാ തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പിൽ കോൺഗ്രസ് വൻ ഭൂരിപക്ഷത്തോടെ വിജയിച്ചപ്പോൾ മുഖ്യമന്ത്രി പദവിക്കായി സിദ്ധരാമയ്യയും ഡി.കെ. ശിവകുമാറും തമ്മിൽ ശക്തമായ മത്സരമാണ് നടന്നത്. സിദ്ധരാമയ്യയ്ക്ക് എം.എൽ.എമാരുടെ വലിയൊരു വിഭാഗത്തിന്റെ പിന്തുണയുണ്ടായിരുന്നപ്പോൾ, പാർട്ടിയെ അധികാരത്തിൽ എത്തിക്കാൻ താഴെത്തട്ടിൽ കഠിനാധ്വാനം ചെയ്ത സംസ്ഥാന അധ്യക്ഷൻ എന്ന നിലയിൽ ഡി.കെ. ശിവകുമാറിനായിരുന്നു ജനകീയ പിന്തുണ.

കോൺഗ്രസ് ദേശീയ നേതൃത്വത്തിന് ഇതൊരു വലിയ പരീക്ഷണമായിരുന്നു. പാർട്ടിക്കുള്ളിലെ ഭിന്നത ഒഴിവാക്കാനും വരാനിരിക്കുന്ന പൊതുതിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പ് ലക്ഷ്യം വെച്ചും കടുത്ത ചർച്ചകൾക്കൊടുവിൽ ഹൈക്കമാൻഡ് സിദ്ധരാമയ്യയെ മുഖ്യമന്ത്രിയായും, ഡി.കെ. ശിവകുമാറിനെ സംസ്ഥാനത്തെ ഏക ഉപമുഖ്യമന്ത്രിയായും (കൂടാതെ പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട വകുപ്പുകളും പാർട്ടി അധ്യക്ഷ പദവിയും നൽകി) നിശ്ചയിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. ഭാവിയിൽ മുഖ്യമന്ത്രി പദവി പങ്കിട്ടെടുക്കാം എന്ന ഉറപ്പിലാണ് ഈ സമവായം ഉണ്ടായത്.

വ്യക്തിജീവിതവും അജയ്യനായ പോരാളിയുടെ കരുത്തും

രാഷ്ട്രീയത്തിന് പുറമെ വലിയൊരു ബിസിനസ്സ് സാമ്രാജ്യത്തിന് ഉടമ കൂടിയാണ് അദ്ദേഹം. ഭാര്യ ഉഷ, മക്കളായ ഐശ്വര്യ, ആഭരണ, മകൻ ആകാശ് എന്നിവരടങ്ങുന്നതാണ് കുടുംബം. കഫേ കോഫി ഡേ സ്ഥാപകൻ വി.ജി. സിദ്ധാർത്ഥയുടെ ആത്മഹത്യയ്ക്ക് ശേഷവും, ആ കുടുംബത്തെ ചേർത്തുപിടിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് ഡി.കെ. തന്റെ മകൾ ഐശ്വര്യയെ സിദ്ധാർത്ഥയുടെ മകൻ അമർത്യയ്ക്ക് വിവാഹം കൽപിച്ചു നൽകിയത് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ മാനുഷിക മൂല്യങ്ങളുടെ തെളിവാണ്. തന്റെ രാഷ്ട്രീയ ജീവിതത്തിൽ ഇന്നുവരെ ഒരു തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പിൽ പോലും പരാജയപ്പെട്ടിട്ടില്ലാത്ത അജയ്യനായ നേതാവാണ് ഡി.കെ. ശിവകുമാർ.

2013-ൽ പാർട്ടി വിട്ട സഹപ്രവർത്തകന്റെ വീടിന് ചുറ്റും അണികൾ കിടങ്ങു കുഴിച്ച സംഭവം അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ രാഷ്ട്രീയ സ്വാധീനത്തിന്റെ പ്രതീകമായി ഇന്നും രാഷ്ട്രീയ വൃത്തങ്ങളിൽ ചർച്ച ചെയ്യപ്പെടുന്നു. കോൺഗ്രസ് ദേശീയ നേതൃത്വത്തിൽ ഡി.കെ.യെപ്പോലെയുള്ള കരുത്തരായ നേതാക്കൾ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ രാജ്യത്തെ രാഷ്ട്രീയ ചിത്രം മറ്റൊന്നാകുമായിരുന്നു എന്ന് പല രാഷ്ട്രീയ നിരീക്ഷകരും കരുതുന്നു.

D.K. Shivakumar: The Mighty Savior of the Congress

In Karnataka politics, the two letters 'D.K.' are synonymous with courage and strategy. Doddaalahalli Kempegowda Shivakumar, belonging to the Vokkaliga community, is one of the most influential leaders of the Congress party. Consistently winning from the Kanakapura constituency, he emerges as a savior whenever the party faces a crisis, which is why he is known as the official crisis manager of the Congress. He has a history of repeatedly resisting and defeating the political strategies of Amit Shah and the BJP.

Ahmed Patel's Rajya Sabha Election and the Resort Strategy

In August 2017, during the Rajya Sabha elections in Gujarat, the BJP deployed all its resources to defeat Ahmed Patel, who was Sonia Gandhi's trusted aide and political advisor. The party faced a severe crisis as Congress MLAs began defecting in large numbers. It was at this juncture that the high command entrusted the mission to D.K. Shivakumar. D.K. stepped in directly and safely transported 44 Congress MLAs from Gujarat to the Eagleton Resort in Bengaluru.

He shielded these MLAs like a fortress from the BJP's horse-trading attempts and threats from central agencies. Even though the Income Tax department conducted intense raids on D.K. at the resort where the MLAs were staying, he did not back down an inch. Finally, at the exact time of the election, D.K. personally escorted these 44 MLAs with utmost security to the voting center in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. Completely overturning Amit Shah's strategies, Ahmed Patel won by a margin of a single vote. This single event turned D.K. into the most trusted strategist for the Congress at the national level.

Tihar Jail Sentence and Political Victimization

In retaliation for ensuring Ahmed Patel's victory, central agencies began targeting D.K. even more aggressively. Charging him with a money laundering case, the Enforcement Directorate arrested him on September 3, 2019, and imprisoned him in Delhi's Tihar Jail. He endured a harsh imprisonment of about 50 days. Despite attempts to break him mentally by denying him permission even to attend his father's funeral rites, he rejected the incentives and offers put forward by the BJP and remained loyal to the party. Sonia Gandhi's visit to him while in jail proved crucial in elevating his stature in Congress politics later on.

The Chief Minister Post and the Complex Decision of the National Leadership

When the Congress won a thumping majority in the 2023 Karnataka Assembly elections, a fierce contest ensued between Siddaramaiah and D.K. Shivakumar for the Chief Minister's post. While Siddaramaiah had the backing of a large section of MLAs, D.K. Shivakumar enjoyed massive popular support as the state president who worked tirelessly at the grassroots level to bring the party to power. This was a major test for the Congress national leadership. To avoid internal rifts within the party and with an eye on the upcoming general elections, the high command, after intense deliberations, appointed Siddaramaiah as the Chief Minister and D.K. Shivakumar as the state's sole Deputy Chief Minister (along with key portfolios and the party president post). This compromise was reached on the assurance that the Chief Minister's post would be shared in the future.

Personal Life and the Strength of an Invincible Fighter

Apart from politics, he is the owner of a massive business empire. His family consists of his wife Usha, daughters Aishwarya and Aabharana, and son Aakash. Even after the suicide of Cafe Coffee Day founder V.G. Siddhartha, D.K. stood by that family and married his daughter Aishwarya to Siddhartha's son Amartya, which is cited as proof of his humane values. He is also known for his philanthropic activities, such as personally sending Demand Drafts (DDs) to help financially distressed farmers and to support children's education. D.K. Shivakumar is an invincible leader who has never lost an election in his entire political career. The incident in 2013, where his followers dug a trench around the house of a colleague who defected from the party, is still discussed in political circles as a symbol of his political clout. Many political analysts believe that if there had been strong leaders like D.K. at the helm of the national leadership, the country's political landscape would have been entirely different.

ಅಹ್ಮದ್ ಪಟೇಲ್ ಅವರನ್ನು ಗೆಲ್ಲಿಸಿದ್ದಕ್ಕೆ ಪ್ರತೀಕಾರವಾಗಿ ಕೇಂದ್ರ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಗಳು ಡಿ.ಕೆ. ಅವರನ್ನು ಮತ್ತಷ್ಟು ಕಾಡಲಾರಂಭಿಸಿದವು. ಅಕ್ರಮ ಹಣ ವರ್ಗಾವಣೆ ಪ್ರಕರಣದಡಿ 2019ರ ಸೆಪ್ಟೆಂಬರ್ 3 ರಂದು ಜಾರಿ ನಿರ್ದೇಶನಾಲಯ (ED) ಅವರನ್ನು ಬಂಧಿಸಿ ದೆಹಲಿಯ ತಿಹಾರ್ ಜೈಲಿಗೆ ಅಟ್ಟಿತು. ಸುಮಾರು 50 ದಿನಗಳ ಕಾಲ ಅವರು ಕಠಿಣ ಜೈಲು ವಾಸ ಅನುಭವಿಸಿದರು. ತಂದೆಯ ಅಂತ್ಯಕ್ರಿಯೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪಾಲ್ಗೊಳ್ಳಲು ಸಹ ಅನುಮತಿ ನೀಡದೆ ಮಾನಸಿಕವಾಗಿ ಕುಗ್ಗಿಸಲು ಯತ್ನಿಸಿದರೂ, ಬಿಜೆಪಿ ನೀಡಿದ ಆಮಿಷಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಕೊಡುಗೆಗಳನ್ನು ತಿರಸ್ಕರಿಸಿ ಅವರು ಪಕ್ಷಕ್ಕೆ ನಿಷ್ಠರಾಗಿ ಉಳಿದರು. ಜೈಲಿನಲ್ಲಿದ್ದಾಗ ಸೋನಿಯಾ ಗಾಂಧಿ ಅವರು ಇವರನ್ನು ಭೇಟಿ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದು, ಮುಂದೆ ಕಾಂಗ್ರೆಸ್ ರಾಜಕಾರಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರ ಸ್ಥಾನಮಾನ ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಲು ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಕಾರಣವಾಯಿತು.

ಮುಖ್ಯಮಂತ್ರಿ ಹುದ್ದೆ ಮತ್ತು ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ನಾಯಕತ್ವದ ಜಟಿಲ ನಿರ್ಧಾರ

2023ರ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ವಿಧಾನಸಭಾ ಚುನಾವಣೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಂಗ್ರೆಸ್ ಭರ್ಜರಿ ಬಹುಮತದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಜಯಗಳಿಸಿದಾಗ ಮುಖ್ಯಮಂತ್ರಿ ಹುದ್ದೆಗಾಗಿ ಸಿದ್ದರಾಮಯ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ಡಿ.ಕೆ. ಶಿವಕುಮಾರ್ ನಡುವೆ ತೀವ್ರ ಪೈಪೋಟಿ ನಡೆದಿತ್ತು. ಸಿದ್ದರಾಮಯ್ಯ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆಯ ಶಾಸಕರ ಬೆಂಬಲವಿದ್ದರೆ, ಪಕ್ಷವನ್ನು ಅಧಿಕಾರಕ್ಕೆ ತರಲು ತಳಮಟ್ಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಠಿಣ ಶ್ರಮ ವಹಿಸಿದ ರಾಜ್ಯ ಘಟಕದ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾಗಿ ಡಿ.ಕೆ. ಶಿವಕುಮಾರ್ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಅಪಾರ ಜನಬೆಂಬಲವಿತ್ತು. ಇದು ಕಾಂಗ್ರೆಸ್ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ನಾಯಕತ್ವಕ್ಕೆ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆಯಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಪಕ್ಷದೊಳಗಿನ ಭಿನ್ನಾಭಿಪ್ರಾಯಗಳನ್ನು ತಪ್ಪಿಸಲು ಮತ್ತು ಮುಂಬರುವ ಸಾರ್ವತ್ರಿಕ ಚುನಾವಣೆಗಳನ್ನು ಗಮನದಲ್ಲಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡು, ಹೈಕಮಾಂಡ್ ತೀವ್ರ ಚರ್ಚೆಯ ನಂತರ ಸಿದ್ದರಾಮಯ್ಯ ಅವರನ್ನು ಮುಖ್ಯಮಂತ್ರಿಯನ್ನಾಗಿ ಮತ್ತು ಡಿ.ಕೆ. ಶಿವಕುಮಾರ್ ಅವರನ್ನು ರಾಜ್ಯದ ಏಕೈಕ ಉಪಮುಖ್ಯಮಂತ್ರಿಯನ್ನಾಗಿ (ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಖಾತೆಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಪಕ್ಷದ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷ ಸ್ಥಾನದೊಂದಿಗೆ) ನೇಮಿಸಿತು. ಭವಿಷ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಖ್ಯಮಂತ್ರಿ ಹುದ್ದೆಯನ್ನು ಹಂಚಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಭರವಸೆಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ಈ ಒಮ್ಮತಕ್ಕೆ ಬರಲಾಯಿತು.

ವೈಯಕ್ತಿಕ ಜೀವನ ಮತ್ತು ಅಜೇಯ ಹೋರಾಟಗಾರನ ಶಕ್ತಿ

ರಾಜಕಾರಣದ ಹೊರತಾಗಿ ಅವರು ಬೃಹತ್ ಉದ್ಯಮ ಸಾಮ್ರಾಜ್ಯದ ಒಡೆಯರಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಅವರ ಕುಟುಂಬದಲ್ಲಿ ಪತ್ನಿ ಉಷಾ, ಪುತ್ರಿಯರಾದ ಐಶ್ವರ್ಯಾ, ಆಭರಣ ಮತ್ತು ಪುತ್ರ ಆಕಾಶ್ ಇದ್ದಾರೆ. ಕೆಫೆ ಕಾಫಿ ಡೇ ಸಂಸ್ಥಾಪಕ ವಿ.ಜಿ. ಸಿದ್ದಾರ್ಥ ಅವರ ಆತ್ಮಹತ್ಯೆಯ ನಂತರವೂ ಆ ಕುಟುಂಬವನ್ನು ಕೈಬಿಡದ ಡಿ.ಕೆ., ತಮ್ಮ ಮಗಳು ಐಶ್ವರ್ಯಾ ಅವರನ್ನು ಸಿದ್ದಾರ್ಥ ಅವರ ಪುತ್ರ ಅಮರ್ತ್ಯ ಅವರೊಂದಿಗೆ ವಿವಾಹ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದು ಅವರ ಮಾನವೀಯ ಮೌಲ್ಯಗಳಿಗೆ ಸಾಕ್ಷಿಯಾಗಿದೆ. ಆರ್ಥಿಕವಾಗಿ ಸಂಕಷ್ಟದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ರೈತರಿಗೆ ನೆರವಾಗಲು ಮತ್ತು ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಖುದ್ದಾಗಿ ಡಿಮ್ಯಾಂಡ್ ಡ್ರಾಫ್ಟ್‌ಗಳನ್ನು (DD) ಕಳುಹಿಸುವಂತಹ ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಕಾರ್ಯಗಳನ್ನೂ ಅವರು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ತಮ್ಮ ರಾಜಕೀಯ ಜೀವನದಲ್ಲಿ ಇಂದಿನವರೆಗೂ ಯಾವುದೇ ಚುನಾವಣೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸೋಲರಿಯದ ಅಜೇಯ ನಾಯಕರಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಡಿ.ಕೆ. ಶಿವಕುಮಾರ್. 2013ರಲ್ಲಿ ಪಕ್ಷ ತೊರೆದ ಸಹೋದ್ಯೋಗಿಯೊಬ್ಬರ ಮನೆಯ ಸುತ್ತಲೂ ಅವರ ಬೆಂಬಲಿಗರು ಕಂದಕ ತೋಡಿದ್ದ ಘಟನೆ ಅವರ ರಾಜಕೀಯ ಪ್ರಭಾವದ ಸಂಕೇತವಾಗಿ ಇಂದಿಗೂ ರಾಜಕೀಯ ವಲಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಚರ್ಚೆಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ನಾಯಕತ್ವದ ಚುಕ್ಕಾಣಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಡಿ.ಕೆ. ಅವರಂತಹ ಪ್ರಬಲ ನಾಯಕರಿದ್ದಿದ್ದರೆ ದೇಶದ ರಾಜಕೀಯ ಚಿತ್ರಣವೇ ಬದಲಾಗುತ್ತಿತ್ತು ಎಂದು ಹಲವು ರಾಜಕೀಯ ವಿಶ್ಲೇಷಕರು ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯಪಡುತ್ತಾರೆ.
