This is both sad and unfortunate at a time when unity and maturity are most needed.
The Resilience of V.D. Satheesan
V.D. Satheesan has led this political battle with determination, courage, and clarity. He stood firm against all odds and consistently confronted the LDF without fear, often becoming the primary target of political attacks. More importantly, he introduced discipline and direction within the party at a critical time.
Strategic Pillars of the UDF Victory
A few key factors played a major role in this victory:
- Organizational Discipline: V.D. Satheesan firmly opposed Members of Parliament contesting Assembly elections, a decision that brought clarity, accountability, and renewed confidence among the cadre and public.
- Secular Autonomy: He resisted attempts by religious and community power centers to dictate Congress candidate selection and political agenda, thereby reinforcing the party’s secular and democratic character.
- A Vision for Governance: He presented a clear vision for Kerala’s economic growth and future development, giving people confidence that the UDF was prepared not just to oppose, but to govern.
- Ideological Consistency: He fought the LDF politically and ideologically with consistency and courage, even under intense pressure.
The Risk of Overlooking the Public Sentiment
At this stage, any decision that goes against the larger sentiment of the people and party workers could become the beginning of another decline for the Congress in Kerala. Other parties may survive internal crises because of their organizational systems, but Congress has repeatedly suffered whenever leadership questions overshadow public mandate.
Evaluating Alternate Leadership Claims
K.C. Venugopal: He is undoubtedly a capable leader with strong national relevance, but at present he is not an alternative to V.D. Satheesan in Kerala. His strengths are better suited for national politics and organizational responsibilities at the central level rather than creating friction within a state unit that currently enjoys unusual harmony among workers and leaders.
Ramesh Chennithala: He is an experienced and seasoned leader, but over the years he has struggled to consistently inspire unity and confidence across factions. His leadership style has often lacked continuity and the charisma needed to keep the entire organization together during difficult periods.
Learning from Past Failures
Congress has already witnessed the consequences of leadership miscalculations in states like Assam, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Karnataka. Kerala should not become another example where internal ambitions weaken a historic opportunity.
A Call for Political Maturity
This is a moment for wisdom, restraint, and political maturity. K.C. Venugopal and Ramesh Chennithala should think carefully before staking claim to the leadership and instead align themselves with the larger public mood and the aspirations of party workers.
The Road Ahead: Stability vs. Regression
